Jazz Bootcamp Returns!

An informative mixed ability workshop that I normally only run once a year. The workshop is hands-on and a great opportunity to learn things that you won't discover in a 1-2-1 setting. You will also gain experience of playing with others (if you want to) in a supportive, non-scary environment. By popular demand, we will incorporate plenty of time to play, accompany etc as in recent jam sessions.

What is the standard?

These things are always mixed ability... no matter how I word the publicity! To make it simple, if you can get through a few lead sheets then you're good enough to attend! I will always make sure every person in the room has the chance to learn something new (at any level). Beginners to advanced students are well catered for.

We are a family and there to help each other, not to compete. Even I'm not above you, I'm on my own journey too! Having said that, if you are an advanced student you should also know that I am used to having beginners, professional musicians/teachers in the same workshops so you will also be well taken care of.

What is the format?

Relaxed, inspiring, informative, hard work and fun.

I strive to meet the needs of the people who attend rather than having a rigid plan no matter what. I will demonstrate concepts and give as many students as possible, the chance to try things out during the day. There will be a few pianos available and you are welcome to bring a keyboard if you like. The main piano will be clearly visible to everyone as live video is shown on screen during the workshop. You will have the chance to learn by watching others, by playing and by watching me. The numbers will be limited enough so that you will also get some personal attention from me.

What will be covered?

Morning Session

The morning class will concentrate on chord movements, voicings and applications to tunes. I will also introduce some key principles and ideas for soloing. I always account for the ability levels in the room and make sure there is something for every level.

Afternoon Session

The afternoon session will emphasise playing together. There will be plenty of opportunities for students to play while getting some support regarding accompanying, introductions, endings, transposing etc. We normally have some of my students who also sing, and I will also provide a bass player (details to be confirmed).

Some comments from previous Bootcamp attendees

"Thank you very much for having me on the bootcamp yesterday!. I had a great time, and it was especially good to meet people with the same interest as I hardly know anyone who is into jazz."

Great time at Bootcamp thanks. I find it a good kick up the a*** and a great chance to speak to the other guys out there.

Thanks for the boot camp, it was a wonderful opportunity to revisit the concepts, refresh minds and spend a day immersed in the wonderful but still mysterious world of jazz.

It was an incredible day Shan. I'm now able to see the journey much clearer, especially having met some of your other students. Please do some more of these!
